Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform routine and special histology procedures including grossing, embedding, microtomy and staining to produce diagnostic-quality slides
• Operate and maintain automated IHC systems and perform manual special stains when required
• Prepare frozen sections and mount sections on slides for rapid intraoperative diagnosis
• Process cytology specimens including ThinPrep, cell block and cytospin preparations
• Ensure strict adherence to laboratory protocols, safety standards and specimen tracking to protect patient care
• Troubleshoot staining and processing issues and document corrective actions to maintain quality
• Collaborate with pathologists, technologists and support staff to prioritize cases and meet turnaround time goals
• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts and assist with training or mentoring when needed

Qualifications

• ASCP-HT certification required
• Minimum 2 years histology experience in a hospital/clinical laboratory (no first-time travelers)
• Strong experience in grossing, embedding, microtomy, and IHC (automated and manual)
• Experience with cytology preparations (ThinPrep, cell block, cytospin) preferred
• Epic experience preferred
• Vaccinated and boosted (per travel requirement at time of submittal)
• Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced hospital anatomical pathology environment

Education

• Associate's Degree in Science preferred; equivalent experience considered

Knowledge & Skills

• Histology workflows: grossing, fixation, embedding, tissue processing
• Microtomy skills for paraffin and frozen sections, including precision cutting
• Staining techniques: H&E, PAS, special stains and immunohistochemistry
• Automated IHC operation and manual IHC troubleshooting
• Cytology techniques: ThinPrep, cell block and cytospin preparation
• Tissue processing knowledge (decalcification, clearing, dehydration)
• Familiarity with histology cassettes, cryostats and microtomes
• Ability to identify artifacts and ensure slide quality for diagnosis
• Strong documentation habits and specimen tracking skills
• Team communication and the ability to prioritize urgent cases
