Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology care during locum assignments
• Cover hospital call responsibilities on weekends, managing urgent consults and procedures
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy
• Deliver advanced procedures such as EUS and ERCP as indicated
• Interpret esophageal manometry and perform esophageal dilatation when needed
• Perform liver and small bowel biopsies and manage PEG procedures
• Insert and manage Sengstaken-Blakemore tubes and perform endoscopic hemostasis (banding, injection, cautery)
• Collaborate closely with surgery, hepatology and other specialties to ensure coordinated patient care
• Document care thoroughly in Epic EMR and participate in handoffs and follow-up planning

Qualifications

• MD or DO with board certification or eligibility in Gastroenterology
• Active medical license in Virginia, or ability to obtain state licensure promptly
• Proven experience in GI procedures — colonoscopy, EGD, EUS and ERCP required
• Comfortable interpreting esophageal manometry and performing dilatation
• Experience managing Sengstaken-Blakemore tube and performing biopsies
• Outpatient gastroenterology and internal medicine clinical experience required
• Familiarity with Epic EMR and strong clinical documentation skills
• BLS/ACLS certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Locum/contract experience and flexibility for weekend hospital call preferred

Education

• MD or DO degree; completion of an accredited Gastroenterology fellowship

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong procedural endoscopy skills across diagnostic and therapeutic cases
• Excellent inpatient consultative skills and triage judgement
• Comfort with acute GI bleeding management and emergency endoscopy
• Proficient use of Epic for charting, orders and communication
• Collaborative communication with multi-disciplinary teams
• Efficient time management in high-volume procedural settings
• Patient-centered bedside manner and clear patient communication
