Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform grossing, embedding and microtomy with precision to produce high-quality tissue sections
• Prepare and stain slides (H&E, special stains) and support automated and manual IHC workflows
• Operate cryostat for frozen sections and prepare rapid intraoperative specimens as needed
• Run and monitor tissue processing, including handling calcified/decalcified samples and GI specimens
• Maintain accurate documentation and work with Epic (preferred) for charting and specimen tracking
• Troubleshoot staining and microtomy issues, identifying artifacts and ensuring diagnostic quality
• Follow hospital protocols for specimen fixation, embedding techniques, and biosafety
• Collaborate with pathologists and the lab team to deliver timely, patient-focused results

Qualifications

• ASCP-HT certification required
• Minimum 2 years of hospital histology experience (routine anatomical pathology) — no first-time travelers
• Proven experience with grossing, embedding, microtomy, staining and IHC (automated/manual)
• Experience preparing frozen sections and working with cryostats
• Familiarity with Epic is preferred
• Travelers must be vaccinated and boosted (as noted in the posting) and include all RTO at time of submittal

Education

• Associate's Degree in Science (preferred)

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong knowledge of tissue processing and paraffin section preparation
• Skilled in automated IHC and special stains plus some manual stain techniques
• Comfortable with cryostat operation and frozen section preparation
• Understanding of fixation types, decalcification, and handling core biopsies and excisions
• Cytology prep skills (ThinPrep, cell block, cytospin) are a plus
• Ability to identify artifacts and maintain high-quality slide preparation standards
• Familiarity with laboratory safety, hospital workflows, and interdisciplinary collaboration
