Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver comprehensive nursing care for patients of all ages in the emergency/acute setting
- Make independent clinical decisions during your shift and maintain accountability for nursing actions
- Supervise, delegate to, and support CNAs/techs to ensure safe, high-quality patient care
- Document care thoroughly in the electronic medical record and transcribe physician orders accurately
- Participate in developing and implementing department policies, care plans, and nursing procedure manuals
- Assess patient conditions, evaluate emergencies, and implement appropriate interventions
- Maintain infection control standards and ensure safe medication administration and supply levels
- Attend departmental meetings, provide nursing reports at shift change, and complete required administrative forms
Qualifications
- Current full, unrestricted RN license in Alaska required; direct hires must have applied for Alaska license before start date (agency staff must have active Alaska license)
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN, ADN, or Diploma)
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained biannually
- TNCC preferred (required for ED nurses)
- Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and every three years; High Risk Competency required within 3 months and annually
- Ability to work independently, make sound clinical judgments, and supervise others
- No prior experience required, though acute care/ED/long-term care experience is preferred
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing — BSN, ADN, or Nursing Diploma accepted
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of nursing and medical practices, hospital and long-term care regulations
- Excellent patient assessment and clinical decision-making skills
- Proficient documentation and electronic medical record (EMR) use
- Infection control and medication administration expertise
- Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams
- Leadership skills for delegation and supervision of staff
