Roles & Responsibilities

• Screen, diagnose, and treat patients with speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders in the inpatient acute care setting
• Perform FEES and other instrumental and clinical swallowing assessments to inform safe, effective care plans
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, case managers, and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate safe discharges
• Provide timely, clear documentation and treatment plans in the medical record
• Educate patients, families, and staff on dysphagia management, safe swallowing strategies, and communication supports
• Operate and maintain specialty equipment as needed (endoscope, VitalStim, augmentative communication devices, electrolarynx)

Qualifications

• Current Hawaii state license as a Speech Language Pathologist (required)
• Current ASHA certification (CCC-SLP) required
• Current CPR certification at BLS/HCP level required
• Completion of a FEES course required; if not completed at hire, must be completed within six months
• Preferred: minimum of 1 year experience as an SLP in an acute care setting
• Preferred: prior FEES clinical experience and MBS ImP experience

Knowledge & Skills

• Dysphagia assessment and management expertise
• FEES (Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow) competency
• Experience with instrumental swallowing evaluations like MBS ImP
• Adult swallowing, communication, and cognitive evaluation and treatment skills
• Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication devices
• Experience using VitalStim and electrolarynx devices
• Strong interdisciplinary teamwork and clinical documentation skills
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-acuity acute care environment
