Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform accurate phlebotomy and venipuncture on the assigned patient population, ensuring proper patient identification with two identifiers
• Collect specialized specimens including throat swabs, MRSA swabs, urine samples, heel/finger sticks, blood cultures and blood bank specimens
• Perform arterial punctures for adult patients (Rockford location) and manage glucose tolerance and hormone stimulation collections on schedule
• Register patients and enter demographic and insurance data into HIS and LIS to support efficient sample processing
• Label specimens correctly with patient name, DOB, date/time of collection and collector code to assure specimen integrity
• Receive, accession, centrifuge, aliquot and deliver specimens; package and track specimens for courier or reference laboratory transport
• Perform waived testing and quality control, and communicate critical results to authorized personnel as required
• Drive to client sites or patient homes to collect and transport specimens, maintaining chain of custody and proper handling
• Assist with inventory, supply management, and maintaining cleanliness of lab glassware and workspaces

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of phlebotomy experience
• Proficient with Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
• Demonstrated ability to perform accurate specimen collection, labeling and aseptic technique
• Experience with arterial puncture and timed specimen collections (Rockford-specific duties)
• Comfortable performing waived testing and following quality control procedures
• Reliable transportation and ability to travel to client sites for specimen collection
• Strong communication skills for patient interaction and collaborating with clinical staff

• Waived testing procedures (glucose, rapid flu/strep/mono, pregnancy, dipstick urinalysis)
• Research/special collection kits (Lab One) and inventory/supply management
• Basic insurance/billing knowledge for reference labs and specimen packaging/transport
