Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide safe, compassionate direct patient care to mothers and newborns throughout the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods
• Conduct thorough patient assessments and develop individualized care plans using the nursing process
• Implement and evaluate nursing interventions, adjusting plans based on patient response and clinical changes
• Monitor fetal well-being and maternal status using AWHONN fetal heart monitoring standards and escalate concerns through the chain of command
• Educate patients and families on postpartum care, newborn care and recovery to promote healthy transitions home
• Maintain standards of care, safety protocols and infection control practices in the Birthplace
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated, high-quality care for mothers and newborns
• Support and mentor other nursing personnel during clinical activities and emergencies

Qualifications

• Active RN license suitable for practice (facility requires license verification via Nursys)
• Current AWHONN/Fetal Heart Monitoring certification
• Current BLS certification
• DCI/BVP certification as listed by the facility
• Completion of required facility screening: drug screen (10-panel minimum), fit test and color-blind test
• Up-to-date immunizations and health clearance (COVID-19, MMR, Hepatitis B, Influenza, Varicella, Tdap, TB screening or PPD with negative CXR, physical/health statement)
• Experience providing antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care and newborn care preferred
• Ability to pass facility competency checks (Prime exams and skills checklist) prior to or upon start

Knowledge & Skills

• Skilled in patient assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation
• Strong knowledge of maternal/newborn physiology and labor management
• Proficient in fetal heart monitoring and interpreting strip changes
• Ability to respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition
• Competent in patient and family education with an emphasis on safe discharge planning
• Familiar with safety, infection control practices and maintaining standards of care in a busy Birthplace
• Comfortable guiding and delegating to other nursing personnel while maintaining accountability
