Roles & Responsibilities
- Monitor pediatric patients in the post-anesthesia care unit and ensure safe recovery
- Assess airway, breathing and circulation and intervene promptly when needed
- Administer medications and pain management interventions per orders
- Provide compassionate, family-centered education and handoffs to caregivers
- Collaborate with anesthesia, surgical teams and unit staff to coordinate care
- Document patient status and interventions accurately in the medical record
- Maintain a safe, calming environment for children and families during recovery
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure (Missouri license or compact RN where applicable)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred
- Experience or strong interest in PACU and pediatric patient care
- Comfortable with IV medications, airway management and pediatric assessment
- Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN). BSN preferred where available.
Knowledge & Skills
- Post-anesthesia care principles and pediatric recovery assessment
- Airway and respiratory management for children
- Medication administration and titration in the PACU setting
- Pain management techniques for postoperative pediatric patients
- Accurate charting and handoff communication
- Calm, reassuring approach with children and families
