Roles & Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain a safe, sterile operating room environment using strict sterile technique
- Check supplies and equipment before cases to ensure everything functions properly
- Scrub, gown and glove yourself, the surgeon and assistants efficiently and safely
- Perform accurate surgical counts with the circulator before incision and before closure
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and pass instruments smoothly during procedures
- Assist with draping the sterile field and prepping the suite for the next patient
- Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization and assist with terminal cleaning of the room
- Train and mentor new employees and students, helping build a skilled OR team
Qualifications
- Trade or Technical School certificate or diploma in surgical technology or related field
- Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required
- At least 1 year previous scrub tech / surgical technologist experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of sterile technique, instrument handling, counts and draping
- Comfortable participating in call rotation and adapting to OR scheduling needs
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills; able to mentor new staff and students
Education
- Trade/Technical School Certificate or Diploma in Surgical Technology
- NBSTSA Certification (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)

- Sterile technique and maintaining aseptic environment
- Instrument handling and passing during surgical procedures
- Performing and documenting surgical counts with accuracy
- Operating room setup and equipment checks
- Draping, gowning and gloving best practices
- Terminal sterilization processes and instrument preparation
- Patient safety focus and ability to anticipate clinician needs
- Training and mentoring newer staff and students
