Roles & Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain a safe, sterile operating room environment using strict sterile technique
• Check supplies and equipment before cases to ensure everything functions properly
• Scrub, gown and glove yourself, the surgeon and assistants efficiently and safely
• Perform accurate surgical counts with the circulator before incision and before closure
• Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and pass instruments smoothly during procedures
• Assist with draping the sterile field and prepping the suite for the next patient
• Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization and assist with terminal cleaning of the room
• Train and mentor new employees and students, helping build a skilled OR team

Qualifications

• Trade or Technical School certificate or diploma in surgical technology or related field
• Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) required
• At least 1 year previous scrub tech / surgical technologist experience preferred
• Strong knowledge of sterile technique, instrument handling, counts and draping
• Comfortable participating in call rotation and adapting to OR scheduling needs
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills; able to mentor new staff and students

Education

• Trade/Technical School Certificate or Diploma in Surgical Technology
• NBSTSA Certification (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)

• Instrument handling and passing during surgical procedures
• Performing and documenting surgical counts with accuracy
• Operating room setup and equipment checks
• Draping, gowning and gloving best practices
