Location: Springfield, VT

Contract Type: Perm

Shift Type: Monday-Thursday, Day shifts (Mon: OR; Tue: GI Endoscopy; Wed: OR or GI Endoscopy; Thu: Clinic). Call: approximately 10 days/month; when covering weekend call you will be off Thursday and work Fri–Sun. On-call expectations: 1-hour response to hospital, 15-minute response to a page. Primarily day shift coverage with occasional weekend call.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality general surgical care for adults (approx. ages 16+), including pre-op and post-op management
• Perform common operative cases such as cholecystectomy and hernia repair, including laparoscopic techniques
• Perform upper and lower GI endoscopy (significant procedural volume expected)
• Cover the operating room and respond to emergency surgical cases in collaboration with the ED team
• Run outpatient clinic care on designated clinic day, including continuity patient management
• Maintain timely documentation, participate in quality improvement, and collaborate with hospital staff
• Serve as the primary on-call surgeon for the hospital with professional judgment and timely responses

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree required
• Board Eligible or Board Certified in General Surgery
• Minimum of 1 year post-training general surgery employment experience required; 5+ years preferred
• Must be able to obtain Vermont medical license (credentialing can begin prior to license; VT MD license typically ~90 days)
• Current, unrestricted US work authorization required (visa candidates not accepted)
• Able to live within a 1-hour radius of the hospital and respond to pages within 15 minutes
• No history of lapsed board certification requiring re-obtainment
• Comfortable with solo coverage in a small, rural hospital setting

Education

Knowledge & Skills

• Proven skills in general surgery procedures and laparoscopic techniques
• Experience with upper and lower GI endoscopy (high procedural volume expected)
• Operating room workflow, perioperative care, and teamwork with nursing/OR staff
• Ability to triage and manage acute surgical presentations in collaboration with ED physicians
• Strong clinical judgment, effective communication, and independent decision-making
• Clinic management skills and patient continuity care experience
