Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess and prepare pediatric patients for surgical procedures with compassion and attention to detail
• Provide age-appropriate education and reassurance to children and their families prior to surgery
• Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia, and perioperative staff to ensure safe, efficient patient flow
• Administer pre-operative medications and perform necessary clinical interventions per protocol
• Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient status in the medical record
• Uphold pediatric safety standards and infection control practices at all times
• Participate actively in orientation and unit-based training to maintain competence and quality care

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts or compact license where applicable
• Experience in pediatric nursing, pre-op, or perioperative settings preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) encouraged
• Strong communication skills for interacting with children, families, and multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to provide compassionate, family-centered care in a fast-paced pre-op environment
• Willingness to attend required orientation and unit training

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Clinical assessment skills specific to pediatric patients
• Familiarity with pre-operative procedures, medication administration, and documentation
• Comfortable with age-appropriate patient/family education and calming techniques
• Teamwork and coordination skills across surgical and perioperative teams
• Attention to detail, infection control, and adherence to safety protocols
• Time-management skills for efficient turnover in short pre-op windows
