Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist surgeons as a skilled RN First Assistant, providing direct intraoperative support
• Perform perioperative patient assessment and contribute to surgical planning
• Maintain sterile technique and ensure patient safety throughout procedures
• Collaborate with surgical teams, anesthesiology, and nursing staff for seamless care
• Provide clear, compassionate postoperative education and handoffs
• Document procedures and patient progress accurately and promptly
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance surgical outcomes

Qualifications

• Active RN license in California (or compact RN with CA authorization as applicable)
• RNFA certification or documented experience functioning as a First Assistant
• Current BLS certification required; ACLS and PALS preferred where applicable
• Minimum perioperative/surgical experience (typically 1+ years in a surgical setting)
• Strong ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team
• Up-to-date immunizations and any facility-specific credentials

Education

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN). BSN preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

• Proven surgical assisting techniques and intraoperative judgment
• Familiarity with sterile field management and OR instrumentation
• Excellent patient assessment and perioperative planning skills
• Strong communication and teamwork in fast-paced surgical environments
• Proficiency with electronic medical records and accurate documentation
• Ability to prioritize, remain calm under pressure, and adapt to OR flow
