Roles & Responsibilities

• Round on cardiothoracic patients and coordinate all aspects of their surgical care
• Perform office visits and outpatient follow-up with clear, patient-centered plans
• Write prescriptions and manage medication adjustments safely and effectively
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests to guide clinical decision making
• Remove chest tubes and sutures when clinically appropriate
• Prepare preoperative orders and ensure patients are optimized for surgery
• Manage FMLA/disability paperwork and other administrative patient needs
• Arrange home health orders and coordinate post-discharge care with the team
• Provide phone triage and timely patient communication to address concerns

Qualifications

• Current Nurse Practitioner certification and active NP license (scope of practice per state requirements)
• Prescriptive authority appropriate for Virginia practice
• Experience in cardiothoracic care or surgical/perioperative settings (locum candidates with applicable APP experience encouraged to apply)
• Comfort working autonomously as an APP with physician supervision available onsite
• Proficiency in EPIC or similar EMR for documentation and order entry
• Demonstrated skills in procedures such as chest tube and suture removal and in medication management
• Willingness to complete credentialing within the estimated 60-90 day timeframe

Education

• Graduate degree in nursing (MSN or DNP) and NP certification preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong patient assessment and perioperative clinical judgment
• Care coordination across inpatient and outpatient settings
• Acute and chronic illness management for adult and geriatric populations
• Clear communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to interpret labs, imaging, and other diagnostic tests
• Comfort with administrative duties including documentation and forms processing
