Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to postpartum mothers and their newborns
• Perform thorough maternal and newborn assessments and monitor for changes in condition
• Support and teach families about breastfeeding, newborn care, discharge planning, and postpartum recovery
• Collaborate closely with physicians, lactation consultants, and interdisciplinary staff to create safe care plans
• Accurately document assessments, interventions, and patient education in the medical record
• Respond promptly to obstetric and neonatal emergencies, escalating per protocol
• Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes

Qualifications

• Current RN licensure (Texas RN license or Compact RN, as applicable)
• Minimum 1 year of recent RN experience (postpartum, mother-baby or related maternal-newborn care preferred)
• BLS required; Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred
• Demonstrated skills in newborn care, postpartum assessment, and lactation support
• Strong communication skills and the ability to educate and empower new families

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Clinical knowledge of postpartum physiology and common maternal complications
• Proficiency in newborn assessment and early identification of neonatal concerns
• Comfort with breastfeeding support and family-centered education
• Effective documentation practices in electronic medical records
• Ability to triage, prioritize, and act decisively in urgent situations
• Teamwork and collaboration across disciplines
