Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered nursing care for PCU/step-down patients, maintaining safe patient ratios (estimated 1:3–4)
- Monitor cardiac telemetry continuously and interpret dysrhythmias to guide timely interventions
- Perform IV therapy including IV starts, maintain peripheral lines, PICC and central line care
- Administer and manage blood products, follow arterial line protocols and interpret ABGs as needed
- Support patients with respiratory needs — HFNC, BiPAP/CPAP, oxygen therapy and tracheostomy care
- Participate in Rapid Response and Code teams to ensure rapid, coordinated emergency care
- Follow facility protocols for heparin, insulin drips and cardiac/vasoactive drip management (no titration)
- Document accurately and efficiently in EPIC to ensure continuity of care
- Float across like-acuity units and other campuses when needed, contributing flexibly to patient care needs
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary partners — PT/OT, Respiratory, Pharmacy, Radiology, Social Work and more — to optimize patient outcomes
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required (note: 1 year of solid step-down/PCU experience may be acceptable)
- BLS required
- ACLS required
- EPIC charting experience required
- Demonstrated IV start skill and telemetry experience
- NIHSS, procedural sedation experience, and prior charge experience are preferred
- Comfort with floating to other step-down/PCU units and flexibility with unit assignments
- Active RN license per state/facility requirements
Knowledge & Skills
- Telemetry monitoring and cardiac rhythm interpretation
- Dysrhythmia recognition and management
- IV therapy, peripheral and central line care (PICC/central line)
- Phlebotomy and arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation
- Blood product administration
- Respiratory support: HFNC, BiPAP/CPAP, oxygen therapy and tracheostomy care
- Familiarity with heparin protocols, insulin drips and non-titrating cardiac/vasoactive drips
- Procedural sedation monitoring (preferred)
- Strong EPIC documentation skills
- Effective teamwork and rapid response participation
