Shift Type: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM; typically 4-5 days per week (Day shift), with on-call coverage (schedule TBD) and occasional outreach days (~6 days/month in Newton, IA)

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology care across MercyOne Des Moines and MercyOne West Des Moines
• Perform thorough patient assessments and develop individualized treatment plans
• Manage chemotherapy prescribing, monitoring, and safety protocols
• Coordinate care with imaging, laboratory, and pharmacy teams to ensure smooth patient flow
• Deliver palliative and pain management care, including end-of-life planning when appropriate
• Conduct telehealth visits to extend access and follow-up care
• Cover outreach clinic days in nearby communities (e.g., Newton) to support regional patients
• Collaborate with nursing and multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree and completion of hematology/oncology fellowship
• Board certified or board eligible in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology
• Current medical license in Iowa or ability to obtain licensure in Iowa
• Valid DEA registration (or ability to obtain) and required state credentials
• Experience with chemotherapy management and inpatient/outpatient oncology care
• Comfortable using EPIC (electronic medical record) — EMR experience required
• Basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support certifications as required by employer
• Willingness to participate in telehealth, outreach clinics, and on-call rotations

Education

• MD or DO; completion of Hematology/Oncology fellowship

Knowledge & Skills

• Proficient in patient assessments and creating evidence-based treatment plans
• Chemotherapy management, safety, and monitoring
• Experience with EPIC for documentation and order entry
• Familiarity with inpatient workflows and hospital-based oncology care
• Outpatient clinic efficiency and time management for consults and follow-ups
• Comfort with telehealth platforms and remote patient management
• Basic understanding of medical imaging, lab interpretation, and pharmacy coordination
• Skills in palliative care and pain management to support complex patient needs
