Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide expert post–open heart recovery care for adult CVICU patients, including immediate post-op management directly from the OR
- Monitor and manage advanced cardiac support devices (ECMO, IABP, Impella, LVAD/RVAD) with attention to hemodynamics and device parameters
- Interpret dysrhythmias and ABGs, titrate vasoactive and cardiac drips, and respond to cardiac emergencies with speed and composure
- Care for ventilated patients and manage ventilators, HFNC, BiPAP/CPAP as part of comprehensive respiratory support
- Perform arterial line, central line, and Swan-Ganz monitoring and troubleshooting to support precise hemodynamic management
- Administer blood products and continuous IV sedation safely while following unit protocols and documentation standards
- Collaborate using SBAR and EPIC documentation to communicate changes in patient condition and coordinate interdisciplinary care
- Participate in unit orientation and hospital classroom sessions during week one to ensure competency and compliance
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of critical care (CC) experience — must have CVICU or open heart experience
- Travel experience required; no first-time travelers accepted
- Current ACLS and BLS certifications required; NIHSS required
- Ability to pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty
- Available for hospital orientation week one and daily classes during orientation
- Adherence to facility vaccine policy: flu vaccine required (medical/religious exemptions allowed); COVID-19 vaccine not required
- Comfort working with isolation precautions and appropriate PPE
- Willingness to float as needed and work every other weekend
Knowledge & Skills
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- ECMO, IABP, Impella, LVAD/RVAD familiarity and post-op device care
- Pulmonary artery (Swan-Ganz) monitoring and arterial line management
- Ventilator management, ABG interpretation, HFNC, BiPAP/CPAP
- Titration of vasoactive and cardiac drips; continuous IV sedation
- Blood product administration and central line care
- Charting and communication in EPIC, medication systems like PYXIS, and structured handoff with SBAR
- CRRT exposure and thoracic/post-op surgical patient care
