Roles & Responsibilities
- Lead and direct all aspects of the Health Information Management department to ensure smooth, accurate, and timely record processing
- Manage indexing, abstracting, filing, storage, transcription, retrieval and release of information with an emphasis on accuracy and compliance
- Oversee acute and ambulatory coding quality and timeliness, driving coding accuracy and continuous improvement
- Develop, implement and enforce HIM policies and procedures to ensure regulatory and organizational compliance (including HIPAA)
- Maintain and manage the trauma registry and other key clinical data systems
- Coordinate the physician suspension process related to documentation and coding issues, acting as the departmental liaison to clinical leadership
- Communicate regularly with health center leadership and staff to align HIM operations with clinical and organizational goals
- Supervise, mentor and develop HIM staff to build a high-performing, accountable team
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Science or related field (required) — or a documented plan to complete the degree
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) required
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred (highly preferred)
- Minimum five years of management/supervisory experience (required)
- Minimum five years of medical coding experience (required) including acute and ambulatory coding
- Experience with HIPAA regulations preferred
- Ability to work onsite full time in Salina, Kansas; meets Kansas state license requirements
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Science or related field (required) — candidates nearing completion may be considered with a documented plan
Knowledge & Skills
- Leadership and supervisory skills with a focus on team development and accountability
- Health information management systems and records retention best practices
- Medical coding (acute and ambulatory) and coding accuracy processes
- Indexing, abstracting and trauma registry management
- Release of information processes and HIPAA compliance
- Policy development, documentation best practices and quality improvement
- Transcription oversight and record retrieval workflows
- Strong communication skills for interaction with clinical leadership and multidisciplinary teams
- Familiarity with physician suspension processes and corrective actions
