Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide safe, compassionate post-anesthesia care to surgical patients in the PACU
• Monitor and document patient status, including airway, vital signs and recovery from anesthesia
• Perform timely assessments and initiate appropriate interventions for emerging needs
• Collaborate with anesthesiologists, surgeons and the interdisciplinary team to ensure smooth handoffs
• Educate patients and families on recovery expectations and discharge instructions
• Participate in unit-based quality improvement efforts and uphold patient safety standards

Qualifications

• Current, active RN license valid in Louisiana
• Clinical experience or training in PACU or post-anesthesia care (prior PACU experience preferred)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred or obtained soon after hire
• Strong assessment, critical thinking and communication skills
• Ability to work 12-hour shift schedules as required by the unit

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• BSN preferred but all qualified RN education backgrounds are welcome

Knowledge & Skills

• Patient assessment and monitoring in the immediate post-operative period
• Airway management and recognition of respiratory compromise
• IV therapy, medication administration and familiarity with common post-op medications
• Pain management strategies and patient comfort measures
• Effective interdisciplinary communication and documentation skills
• Ability to prioritize and respond quickly in fast-paced clinical situations
