Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive echocardiogram studies (Transthoracic 2-D, M-Mode, Color-flow Doppler, Transesophageal) with accuracy and clinical confidence.
• Conduct exercise and pharmacologic stress echocardiography and other cardiac diagnostic tests including EKGs, Holter prep/monitoring and cardiac stress testing.
• Operate and optimize cardiac diagnostic equipment and computer analysis tools to deliver high-quality diagnostic information to cardiology physicians.
• Use hospital information systems for scheduling, processing and accurate charging of studies.
• Implement infection control, aseptic technique and equipment disinfection practices to maintain patient safety.
• Provide age-specific care across the lifespan, including neonatal and pediatric patients, ensuring sensitive and appropriate assessment.
• Serve as a professional resource to physicians, nursing staff and other hospital teams; provide preceptorship and clinical instruction to students as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential required.
• Successful completion of an echocardiography certification program and/or minimum 2 years hands-on echocardiography experience required.
• Preferred: Cardiovascular Sonography certificate or equivalent formal training.
• Preferred: Extensive hospital-based experience and experience with pediatric and neonatal echocardiography.
• Comfort with preceptorship/clinical instruction and working with students from contracted programs.

Education

• High School Diploma or GED (required)
• Certificate Program in Cardiovascular Sonography (preferred)

Knowledge & Skills

• Transthoracic echocardiography (2-D), M-Mode and Color-flow Doppler
• Transesophageal echocardiography and stress echocardiography (exercise and pharmacologic)
• EKG/electrocardiography, Holter monitoring and analysis, and cardiac stress testing
• Operation and troubleshooting of echocardiographs, cardiac stress systems, electrocardiographs and Holter monitors
• Familiarity with hospital information systems for scheduling and billing
• Infection control, aseptic technique and equipment disinfection
• Age-specific patient care, including neonatal and pediatric populations
• Ability to teach and mentor students in clinical settings
