Contract Type: Travel Contract
Shift Type: Rotating 12-hour shifts (variable days, may include any day of week); typical shift start/end times include 1:00 PM - 1:00 AM and 3:00 PM - 3:00 AM (most common for travelers). Other 12-hour options in the rotation: 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM, 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM, 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM, and 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM. Schedule includes rotating weekends (every other weekend) and holiday rotation. Night- and evening-focused (primarily nights/evenings) with floating to nearby SJPVH as needed.

Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality emergency nursing care to a very busy ED patient population (170–210 patients/day) with compassion and clinical excellence
- Perform rapid assessment and implement evidence-based interventions for stroke, STEMI, sepsis, psychiatric presentations, and trauma stabilization prior to transfer
- Collaborate with physicians, midlevels, respiratory therapy, pharmacy and techs to ensure timely care and adherence to sepsis and stroke bundles
- Administer and document medications and pain management—follow up on PO meds within one hour and IV pain meds within 30 minutes
- Utilize Cerner FirstNet for ED charting (ED supervisor will provide FirstNet orientation) and sign off on telemetry strips as required
- Work with clinical techs and monitor techs to coordinate patient care, labs, EKGs, and monitoring—step in for lab draws or procedures when staffing requires
- Participate in unit float assignments as needed and complete floor-specific orientation
- Maintain competency expectations (ACLS, BLS, PALS, NIHSS) and complete any required competency testing for conscious sedation if requested
Qualifications
- Current RN license in the state of practice (ability to submit required license documentation)
- Minimum 2 years emergency department experience (2–3 years preferred for travelers)
- Required certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, and NIHSS
- COVID vaccination required
- Prior travel nursing experience preferred
- Experience with Cerner FirstNet preferred; ED-focused charting experience helpful
- Comfort working in a high-volume, fast-paced ED with variable patient acuity and occasional hallway care
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) accepted; BSN not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong emergency assessment and triage recognition (note: travelers are not permitted to perform triage at this site)
- Stroke recognition and NIH Stroke Scale proficiency
- STEMI recognition and rapid coordination with receiving protocols
- Sepsis recognition and implementation of sepsis bundles and boluses
- Telemetry strip interpretation and basic ventilator familiarity
- Excellent communication skills for working with multidisciplinary teams and with patients under stress
- Ability to adapt to varying tech support levels (may perform lab draws, EKGs when clinical techs are limited)
