Roles & Responsibilities

• Screen, diagnose, and treat patients with speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in the inpatient acute care setting
• Perform and interpret Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and other instrumental assessments as appropriate
• Provide professional consultations and collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, case managers, and the interdisciplinary team to support safe discharge planning
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans and document patient progress clearly and promptly
• Operate and troubleshoot augmentative communication and swallowing equipment such as VitalStim, endoscope, and electrolarynx
• Educate patients, families, and caregivers on communication and swallowing strategies to maximize functional recovery

Qualifications

• Current Hawaii State license as a Speech Language Pathologist (required)
• Current ASHA certification (CCC-SLP) required
• Current CPR certification at BLS/HCP level required
• Completion of a FEES course required; if not completed upon hire, must be completed within six months
• Preferred: Minimum of 1 year experience as an SLP in an acute care setting
• Preferred: Prior FEES clinical experience and MBS ImP experience

Education

• Advanced degree and certifications in the field (e.g., Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology preferred)

Knowledge & Skills

• Assessment and treatment of speech, language, cognition, and swallowing disorders
• Competence with FEES and other instrumental swallowing evaluations
• Dysphagia assessment and treatment, including use of VitalStim and endoscopic tools
• Cognitive-communication evaluation and treatment
• Interdisciplinary team collaboration and strong clinical documentation
• Experience in acute care environments and handling medically complex patients
• BLS/CPR and safe patient handling practices
