Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide age-appropriate preventive and curative periodontal and dental hygiene care for patients from infants through geriatrics
• Perform oral tissue examinations, periodontal therapy, coronal polishing, and apply topical fluoride
• Measure and record periodontal pockets and perform dental radiography (X-rays)
• Record vital signs including pulse, blood pressure, and temperature as part of patient assessment
• Manage patient schedule and ensure efficient clinic flow
• Coordinate and conduct community prevention activities such as sealant clinics, Head Start clinics, and health fairs
• Maintain hygienist supplies and sterilize instruments to meet infection control standards
• Contribute to patient education on oral hygiene, home care, and nutrition to prevent oral disease

Qualifications

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required); Bachelor's degree preferred
• Active Dental Hygiene License in Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
• Pass the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
• Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association required within 45 days of start and maintained thereafter
• Clinical Competency Assessment - required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
• High Risk Competency - required within 3 months of hire and annually
• High school diploma or GED

Education

• Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
• Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Proper infection control techniques and instrument sterilization
• Principles of dental and periodontal disease and appropriate treatment therapies
• Clinical hygiene skills including periodontal probing and coronal polishing
• Dental radiography knowledge and safe X-ray practices
• Strong oral and written communication skills for patient education
• Accurate clinical judgment and manual dexterity to perform procedures and sit for extended periods
