Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide thorough psychiatric evaluations and mental health assessments for patients at NKSP - North Kern State Prison
• Manage psychopharmacologic treatment plans and monitor medication response and side effects
• Collaborate closely with correctional healthcare staff and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care
• Document clinical encounters accurately and maintain timely medical records in accordance with facility protocols
• Participate in facility orientation (2-3 weeks) and follow institutional safety and custody procedures
• Deliver crisis intervention and risk assessment when needed to ensure patient and staff safety
• Support continuity of care through clear communication with nursing staff, social services, and custody

Qualifications

• Medical degree (MD or DO) and completion of psychiatry residency
• Valid medical license in California or eligibility to obtain state licensure
• Board certification or active candidacy in Psychiatry is preferred
• Experience in adult psychiatry and working with mental health populations; correctional healthcare experience is a plus
• Current BLS; DEA registration or ability to obtain upon hire
• Strong clinical documentation skills and ability to work within institutional policies

Education

• MD or DO with completed psychiatry residency

Knowledge & Skills

• Expertise in psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and psychopharmacology
• Skilled in crisis assessment, de-escalation, and risk management
• Comfortable working in secure/correctional settings and understanding custody-related procedures
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams
• Proficient clinical documentation and electronic medical record familiarity
• Culturally competent care for diverse patient populations
