Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care to patients of all ages in the Emergency Department
- Perform thorough nursing assessments, develop individualized care plans, and implement interventions
- Administer medications and therapeutics accurately and monitor patient responses
- React calmly and make sound clinical judgments in emergent situations to keep patients safe
- Document patient care, assessments, and progress clearly and completely
- Delegate and supervise CNA/Tech staff and serve as a point of leadership when assigned
- Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care
- Provide patient and family education, discharge instructions, and emotional support
- Participate in unit quality initiatives, staff meetings, and annual competency requirements
Qualifications
- Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska or another U.S. state required
- Direct hire applicants must have applied for an Alaska nursing license before start; agency staff must hold an active Alaska license
- BLS required at hire
- ACLS and PALS must be obtained within 6 months of hire
- TNCC required for Emergency Department nurses
- Clinical Competency and High Risk Competency per employer timelines (clinical competency within 3 months)
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior emergency department or specialty experience preferred
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Current RN license (Alaska or other U.S. state) — educational preparation for RN required per licensure
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills
- Ability to recognize and respond to emergent/critically ill patients
- Medication administration and documentation proficiency
- Infection control practices and patient safety focus
- Competence with basic and specialty equipment (defibrillators, monitors, ventilators, chest tube sets when applicable)
- Airway management skills and familiarity with procedures like intubation, arterial line setup, ABG puncture
- EKG interpretation and basic cardiac care knowledge
- Excellent oral and written communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities
- Patient education, counseling, and support skills
