Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide focused 1:1 nursing care during labor — coach, comfort, and intervene as needed
- Monitor, interpret, and document electronic fetal heart tracings using NICHD terminology and perform NSTs
- Deliver post-operative C-section care from recovery through discharge with thorough teaching
- Stabilize and prepare high-risk maternal and neonatal patients for transfer to tertiary care when needed
- Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, including fetal distress and C-sections
- Perform newborn and well-baby assessments and provide breastfeeding support and consults
- Triage OB phone calls and unscheduled outpatients to ensure safe, timely care
- Supervise and delegate to CNAs and support staff and provide leadership on shift
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient education accurately in the EHR
- Participate in unit goals, staff meetings, and ongoing competency training
Qualifications
- Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Direct hire must have applied for Alaska license before start)
- BLS required on hire; ACLS, PALS, and NRP required within 6 months if not already held
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior Labor & Delivery/OB experience preferred
- Ability to work rotating day and night shifts, weekends, holidays, and take assigned on-call duties
- Comfort with peri-operative/post-surgical care, triage, and delegation/supervisory responsibilities
- Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to function independently during shift
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Current Registered Nurse license required (Alaska or other U.S. state).
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Skilled in electronic fetal monitoring and NICHD terminology interpretation
- Familiarity with neonatal resuscitation and newborn care
- Comfort with C-section post-surgical care and peri-operative nursing
- Competence with cardiac/defibrillator, suction, and EKG equipment
- Medication administration and safe pharmaceutical practices
- Effective oral and written communication and EHR documentation skills
- Ability to teach patients and families and contribute to staff education
