Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide age-specific preventive and curative periodontal and dental hygiene care for infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients
- Examine oral tissues and perform periodontal therapy, coronal polishing and topical fluoride applications
- Perform dental radiographs and measure/mark periodontal pockets accurately
- Record vital signs including pulse, blood pressure and temperature
- Manage patient scheduling and ensure smooth clinic flow
- Coordinate and deliver community prevention activities such as sealant clinics, health fairs and Head Start clinics
- Maintain hygienist supplies and instruments, including proper sterilization and infection control procedures
- Educate patients on oral hygiene, home care and nutrition to improve long-term oral health outcomes
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited two-year Dental Hygiene program (required); Bachelor's degree preferred
- Pass the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
- Active Dental Hygiene License in the State of Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 45 days of start and maintained thereafter
- Clinical Competency Assessment (SEARHC) required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
- High Risk Competency (SEARHC) required within 3 months of hire and annually thereafter
- High school diploma or GED
- Good manual dexterity and ability to sit over patients for extended periods
Education
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Proper infection control techniques and instrument sterilization
- Principles of dental and periodontal disease and appropriate treatment therapies
- Proficiency in dental radiography and periodontal pocket measurement
- Strong clinical hygiene skills and accurate clinical judgment
- Clear oral and written communication skills for patient education
- Comfortable taking and recording vital signs and patient data
