Roles & Responsibilities
- Function as a vital surgical team member under RN direction during cardiac open-heart cases
- Prepare and maintain sterile field and instruments using strict sterile technique
- Scrub for CVOR/Open Heart procedures and assist the surgical team throughout the operation
- Anticipate surgeon needs and pass instruments efficiently to support timely, safe procedures
- Assist across all OR specialties as needed to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care
- Participate in patient care for all ages—from pediatrics to geriatrics—ensuring comfort and safety
- Document case details accurately and support post-op turnover to keep the schedule moving
- Engage in continuing education and competency maintenance to keep skills sharp
Qualifications
- Current certification/licensure to practice surgical technology in Oregon (required)
- One (1) year scrubbing experience in CVOR/Open Heart OR two (2) years acute care scrubbing experience (required)
- Healthcare Provider BLS (required)
- Successful completion of an accredited surgical technology program (CAAHEP/ABHES) or equivalent military training, or documented qualifying practice as outlined in state requirements
- Willingness to work rotating weekends and respond to call as needed
- Comfortable using basic computer applications for documentation (preferred)
Education
- Successful completion of an accredited surgical technology education program (CAAHEP or ABHES) OR equivalent military surgical technologist training OR documented qualifying practice experience as specified by Oregon
- NBSTSA certification or completion of an approved program within the last 12 months (as applicable)
- Completion of 16 hours of relevant continuing education every two years
Knowledge & Skills
- Expertise in sterile technique and instrument handling for cardiac procedures
- Experience working in CVOR/Open Heart settings and familiarity with cardiac instruments and disposables
- Strong team communication and ability to anticipate surgical needs
- Knowledge of perioperative patient safety, positioning, and infection control
- Basic computer literacy for electronic documentation and case coordination
- Ability to adapt across multiple specialties in the OR when called upon
