Contract Type: Travel Contract

Shift Type: Rotating shifts including 12-hour day and night options: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM; additional 8-hour shifts available 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM, 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM. Self-scheduling based on seniority, union schedule with manager balancing and occasional block scheduling. Every-other weekend and every-other holiday required.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate psychiatric nursing care to adolescent and adult patients on a locked inpatient unit
• Use strong de-escalation and therapeutic communication techniques to keep patients and staff safe
• Perform behavioral health assessments and implement individualized care plans
• Collaborate with mental health techs, occupational therapy, social work and other interdisciplinary team members
• Document patient care accurately in EPIC and maintain timely charting standards
• Assist with 15-minute rounds and hands-on patient care—be a doer, not just a charter
• Participate in seclusion and mechanical restraint procedures per policy when necessary and document appropriately
• Float throughout the hospital as needed to support 1:1s and helping-hand assignments

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (license to submit required)
• BLS certification required
• CPI preferred (training/experience in workplace violence prevention recommended)
• Minimum 2 years acute/inpatient nursing experience preferred; psychiatric or state hospital experience highly valued
• Strong de-escalation and communication skills; calm, patient demeanor
• Comfort working with both adolescents and adults in a locked inpatient setting
• Willingness to float and assist with 1:1 assignments and hospital-wide needs
• Candidates may not be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity) per radius rule
• RTO available upfront (7 days or less for a 13-week contract)

Education

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license required
• BSN not required

Knowledge & Skills

• Psychiatric nursing and acute inpatient behavioral health care
• Patient de-escalation and crisis intervention
• Behavioral health assessment and care planning
• EPIC charting and electronic documentation best practices
• Familiarity with restraints/seclusion protocols and safety procedures
• Collaboration with mental health techs, OT, social work, and RT when needed
• Therapeutic communication and patience under pressure
