Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess and triage pediatric patients, performing focused assessments and interpreting vital signs and lab results
• Provide compassionate diabetes education to patients and families, including pump starts and CGM placement guidance
• Administer medications and manage insulin therapy safely, including coordination of diabetes medications
• Perform specimen collection and phlebotomy (capillary, throat, urine, venipuncture) with attention to technique and patient comfort
• Document care accurately in the EHR and follow up on in-basket messages to ensure continuity of care
• Conduct telephone triage, manage pharmacy refill requests, and coordinate multidisciplinary care
• Support immunization efforts including influenza vaccine administration per facility guidelines
• Float to other UCSF units as needed, adapting quickly to different clinic workflows and teams

Qualifications

• California RN License (required)
• BSN (required)
• AHA BLS certification (required)
• Minimum 2 years pediatric nursing experience, including pediatric diabetes education and diabetes medication knowledge
• CDE certification (preferred)
• At least 1 year ambulatory care experience (preferred)
• Ability and willingness to float to other UCSF units and facilities
• COVID-19 vaccine and booster required per facility guideline (medical/religious exemptions only)

Knowledge & Skills

• Insulin pump management and experience with insulin pump starts
• Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) placement and interpretation
• Blood glucose monitoring and diabetes device troubleshooting
• Medication reconciliation and safe medication administration
• EHR/charting proficiency (Apex knowledge/access is a plus)
• Telephone triage and patient/family education skills
• Specimen collection: capillary, throat, urine, venipuncture/phlebotomy
• Assessment and interpretation of laboratory results
• Pediatric-specific diagnoses management: asthma, croup, RSV, ear infections, fever
• Influenza vaccine administration and routine immunization knowledge
• Strong communication and coordination with interdisciplinary teams and support services
• Ability to provide emotional support and education to families regarding school/employment letters and care plans
