Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess and monitor patients recovering from anesthesia, watching airway, breathing, circulation and pain levels
• Manage airways, administer medications and titrate therapies per orders to maintain patient stability
• Perform thorough post-anesthesia assessments and intervene quickly when trends warrant
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers and surgical staff to ensure smooth handoffs and continuity of care
• Document patient status, interventions and handoffs accurately in the medical record
• Educate patients and families on immediate post-op care and safe discharge criteria
• Maintain a clean, safe environment and adhere to infection control and safety protocols
• Support unit flow by coordinating timely transfers to appropriate inpatient units

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license — Louisiana licensure required or eligible
• Clinical experience in PACU, Post-Anesthesia Care or a closely related perioperative setting preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred or as facility requires
• Excellent patient assessment, critical thinking and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced surgical environment

Education

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN/ASN or BSN); BSN preferred by many facilities

Knowledge & Skills

• Post-anesthesia assessment and management
• IV therapy, medication administration and pain management principles
• Familiarity with monitoring equipment and interpreting hemodynamic/respiratory data
• Strong clinical documentation and electronic medical record (EMR) skills
• Teamwork, time management and the ability to prioritize in a surgical setting
• Patient and family education focused on immediate post-op care
