Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide skilled post-anesthesia care to patients in the PACU, monitoring recovery and intervening as needed
• Assess and document patient status, including vital signs, pain level and level of consciousness
• Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately according to orders
• Collaborate with anesthesiologists, surgeons and multidisciplinary team for smooth handoffs
• Educate patients and families about post-operative care and discharge instructions
• Maintain a safe, clean and efficient PACU environment, following policies and infection control practices
• Participate in shift handoffs and thorough documentation to ensure continuity of care

Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Louisiana or compact RN license where applicable
• BLS required; ACLS and PALS preferred or as indicated by facility policy
• Previous experience in PACU, OR or post-operative nursing is strongly preferred
• Strong clinical assessment skills and experience with post-anesthesia monitoring
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills with a patient-centered approach
• Ability to handle fast-paced situations and prioritize competing needs

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); BSN preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Post-anesthesia patient assessment and monitoring
• Airway management fundamentals and recognition of respiratory compromise
• Pain management principles and medication administration
• Electronic health record (EHR) documentation and charting
• IV therapy, infusion pumps and safe medication administration practices
• Infection control, sterile technique and perioperative safety standards
• Critical thinking, rapid decision-making and effective team communication
