Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform molecular extractions (RNA/DNA) and PCR testing accurately and efficiently to support patient care
- Process, accession, and handle specimens following strict biosafety and chain-of-custody procedures
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment including Beckman platforms and NGS instruments such as NextSeq 550
- Document and report test results in Beaker/Epic with attention to detail and regulatory compliance
- Support pre-PCR, post-PCR, RNA bench, and NGS workflows, contributing to sequencing and diagnostics efforts
- Participate in quality control, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities to maintain high lab standards
- Float to other UCSF units as required, providing reliable coverage and cross-unit collaboration
Qualifications
- CA CLS (Generalist) or CGMBS state license required
- Bachelor of Science degree required
- MLS (ASCP) or ASCP-MLS / ASCP-MB preferred
- Minimum 3 years experience working in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting
- Strong molecular extraction and PCR testing experience required
- Experience with Beaker and Epic charting systems is required
- Ability and willingness to float to other UCSF locations
- COVID-19 vaccine and booster required (medical/religious exemptions only)
Education
- Bachelor of Science (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Molecular extractions (RNA/DNA) from blood, tissues, buccal swabs
- PCR testing for respiratory and bacterial targets (e.g., flu, MRSA, staph aureus, COVID)
- Next Generation Sequencing workflows and familiarity with NextSeq 550
- Specimen processing, accessioning, receipt, transport, and collection best practices
- Proficiency with lab information systems: Beaker and Epic
- Hands-on experience with Beckman instrumentation
- Strong pipetting technique, data reporting, and documentation skills
- Understanding of hazardous materials handling, MSDS, labeling, and proper disposal
