Roles & Responsibilities

• Handle surgical instruments and supplies expertly during procedures, anticipating the surgeon’s needs
• Perform first or second scrub duties and assist as an assistant circulator when needed
• Maintain and vigilantly protect the sterile field to ensure patient safety throughout procedures
• Assist with circulating duties by obtaining additional instruments, supplies, and equipment during cases
• Carry out second assisting technical tasks (non-cutting/clamping/suturing) to support optimal outcomes
• Participate in pre-procedure reviews (H&P, consents, radiographic reports) to confirm readiness and accuracy
• Organize, clean, and maintain OR work areas and equipment; support efficient room turnover with End of Case Cleaning
• Support inventory control by reporting supply needs and helping maintain stock levels
• Contribute to orientation and clinical instruction of new staff and students to build a strong team

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required
• Graduation from a nationally accredited surgical technology program is required (unless substitute experience applies)
• Active national surgical technologist certification required and must be maintained
• Internal applicants with 3+ years recent OR experience who are eligible for certification may be considered in place of the formal education requirement
• Associate degree or higher is highly preferred
• Demonstrated ability in sterile technique, instrument handling, and OR teamwork

Education

• High school diploma or GED required
• Graduation from a nationally accredited surgical technology program required (or internal applicants with 3+ years OR experience may be considered)
• Associate degree or higher encouraged / highly preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Proficient in sterile technique and sterile field maintenance
• Strong instrument handling and scrub duties, including first/second scrub roles
• Experience with circulating duties and anticipating procedural needs
• Familiarity with surgical instrumentation specific to assigned specialty
• Knowledge of patient safety practices, infection control, and transmission-based precautions
• Ability to review and apply H&P and radiographic reports to procedural planning
• Comfort with inventory control, end-of-case cleaning, and maintaining organized work areas
• Skills in clinical instruction and orienting new team members
