Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide attentive post-anesthesia nursing care to pediatric patients, monitoring airway, vitals, and recovery progress
- Perform safe and compassionate handoffs to inpatient teams and families, ensuring continuity of care
- Administer medications and manage IVs according to orders, including pain management and antiemetic therapy
- Assess and document patient status in the EHR with clear, timely notes
- Collaborate with anesthesia, surgery, and pediatric teams to support efficient patient throughput
- Recognize and respond to post-op complications quickly and escalate concerns as needed
- Participate in orientation and unit-based education to maintain high standards of pediatric PACU care
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri or eligibility for licensure
- BLS required; PALS and ACLS strongly preferred for pediatric PACU practice
- Previous PACU or post-anesthesia pediatric nursing experience preferred
- Comfortable with pediatric assessments, airway management basics, and IV therapy
- Ability to pass background check and meet facility credentialing requirements
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Additional pediatric certifications or specialty training a plus
Knowledge & Skills
- Post-anesthesia assessment and monitoring for pediatric patients
- Pain assessment and multimodal pain management strategies
- Pediatric airway basics and early recognition of respiratory compromise
- IV management, medication administration, and safe documentation practices
- Family-centered care and effective patient/family education
- Familiarity with common EHR workflows and perioperative documentation
