Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive eye exams and refractions to assess visual needs
• Diagnose and manage common ocular conditions and provide appropriate treatment or referral
• Fit and instruct patients on contact lenses and spectacle prescriptions
• Document clinical findings accurately and maintain clear patient records
• Train and collaborate with staff during the required training week to ensure smooth clinic operations
• Provide patient education on eye health, preventive care, and follow-up plans
• Work professionally within a correctional healthcare setting, adhering to facility protocols

Qualifications

• Licensed Optometrist or Doctor of Optometry (OD) — California license preferred or ability to obtain state licensure
• Clinical experience in primary eye care; experience in corrections or institutional settings is a plus
• Comfortable training staff and participating in a one-week onboarding/training period
• Strong clinical judgment, patient communication skills, and professional bedside manner
• Current basic life support (BLS) if required by facility policies

Education

• Doctor of Optometry (OD) or equivalent clinical degree

Knowledge & Skills

• Comprehensive refraction and ocular assessment skills
• Knowledge of common ocular diseases and management protocols
• Contact lens fitting and spectacle prescribing expertise
• Clear documentation practices and familiarity with electronic health records
• Ability to teach and train staff effectively
• Comfort working safely and professionally in a correctional facility environment
