Roles & Responsibilities

• Deliver exceptional bedside care to a high-acuity MedSurg/Telemetry patient population
• Monitor and interpret cardiac telemetry strips to catch changes early
• Titrate cardiac drips such as heparin and amiodarone with confidence and precision
• Administer blood transfusions while keeping patient safety front and center
• Perform strong IV starts and manage complex vascular access needs
• Collaborate with charge nurses, aides, respiratory therapists, and the interdisciplinary team
• Float to other MedSurg acuity areas as needed, bringing your skills wherever the need is greatest
• Document accurately and efficiently in EPIC
• Support patients and families through high-demand, high-acuity situations with compassion
• Adapt quickly to a fast-paced Level 1 Trauma environment and hit the ground running

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license, ready to submit and start
• Minimum 2 years of MedSurg/Telemetry experience (3+ years and prior travel experience preferred)
• BLS certification required
• ACLS certification required
• NIHSS certification required
• Strong IV start skills and comfort reading and interpreting telemetry strips
• Willingness to complete a Relias EKG exam prior to orientation start
• Open to floating first, since travelers lead the way when floating is needed
• Flexible on scheduling, with every other weekend coverage
• Ability to commit through the holiday blackout window with no PTO from mid-December through the first week of January
• Positive attitude and a genuine team-player mindset

Education

• Common diagnosis / Types of patients "High Demand, High Acuity unit
• Pulmonary Unit- Cystic Fibrosis (only on this floor and 24T), pneumonia, liver patient overflow, Sickle Cell-(high demand and high aquity- pain management q1h pain meds), geriatrics-with active sickness, high fall risk, high demand, family dynamics
• Med Surg patients with high needs and high demands"
• Experience or 'Must have' skills "MUST have strong IV start skills
• Must be able to hit the ground running
• Strong Med Surg background- Must have 2 years Medsurg/Tele experience
• Must have positive attitude"
• Are RN's required to titrate drips yes
• Common titratable &/or set rate drips "heparin, amiodarone, blood transfusions. Per manager can send travelers without this experience, they have the resources to help them
• Blood transfusions"
• Are there Tele/Monitor Techs on this unit? Are RN's required to read their own strips? What brand are the tele monitors? "MUST be able to read and interpret tele- will take a Relias EKG exam prior to orientation start
• Monitor techs on a different unit"
• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Does the charge nurse take an assignment? Charge nurse available on all shifts- will always have a smaller patient assignment
• Are there Nurse Aides on this unit/Ratios Goal is to have 3 every shift usually only have 2
• RT/Equipment (i.e., Cpap, Bipap, High Flow, vents, etc.) Nasal cannula, CPAP and Bi PAP home regimen, occasional trachs-experience would be nice but not required

Knowledge & Skills

• MedSurg and Telemetry nursing across a high-acuity patient mix
• Telemetry interpretation and rhythm recognition
• Cardiac drip titration for heparin and amiodarone
• Blood transfusion administration and monitoring
• Pulmonary care including pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, and liver patient overflow
• Pain management for Sickle Cell patients requiring frequent intervention
• Geriatric care with high fall risk and complex family dynamics
• Nasal cannula, CPAP, and BiPAP support, plus occasional trach experience (a nice-to-have, not a must)
• EPIC charting proficiency
• Strong communication and teamwork skills in a busy Level 1 Trauma setting
