Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, patient-centered care to a diverse Med Surg/Ortho patient population, including post-surgical joint replacements and chronic conditions.
• Administer medications and IV infusions, including heparin and antibiotics, while closely monitoring patient responses.
• Collaborate with charge nurses, patient care techs, and the interdisciplinary team to ensure quality outcomes.
• Perform hourly rounding and deliver bedside shift reports to keep patients informed and safe.
• Document patient assessments and interventions accurately in EPIC.
• Float to PCU and behavioral health units as needed, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Active RN license in Iowa or a compact state—if you're not there yet, let's talk about getting one!
• At least 1 year of recent Med Surg or Ortho experience.
• Current BLS certification (AHA).
• Experience with EPIC charting is a plus.
• Ability to pass an open-book orientation exam (90% or higher)—we provide all the resources!
• Must live 50+ miles from the facility and not have worked for CommonSpirit/CHI in the past year.

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
• Proficiency in IV therapy, wound care, and post-operative care.
• Comfortable with EPIC electronic health records.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Adaptability to float between units.
• Knowledge of common Med Surg diagnoses like COPD, diabetes, sepsis, and CHF.
