Roles & Responsibilities
- Deliver expert, family-centered nursing care to neonates across NICU levels II-IV, using evidence-based practices
- Lead neonatal resuscitation and stabilization efforts, including APGAR scoring and NRP protocols
- Manage complex respiratory support: ventilators, HFNC, bubble CPAP, Vapotherm, nitric oxide, oscillators, and ECMO collaboration
- Administer and monitor critical medications (including anti-seizure medications and insulin) and perform neonatal dosage calculations accurately
- Perform and support specialized procedures: UAC/UVC care, central line management, arterial lines, chest tube care, and assist with lumbar punctures
- Coordinate NICU transport and care transitions, including mother/baby and high-risk delivery attendance when needed
- Provide developmental care, family teaching, breastfeeding support, and compassionate communication to families during high-stress moments
- Monitor for and participate in sepsis workups, thermoregulation strategies, and management of neonatal withdrawal and NEC cases
Qualifications
- Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license (required)
- Current BLS and NRP certifications (listed in job details); STABLE preferred
- Demonstrated NICU experience (care for neonates <24-28 wks through >34 wks and exposure to NICU II–IV populations)
- Experience with critical care technologies such as ECMO, Vapotherm, CRRT, and advanced ventilator modes is highly valued
- Comfort attending high-risk deliveries and coordinating NICU transport
- Strong clinical assessment, neonatal dosage calculation skills, and effective family-centered communication
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); BSN preferred
- Additional neonatal specialty training/certifications encouraged
Knowledge & Skills
- Neonatal resuscitation and APGAR scoring
- NICU-level care (II, III, IV) including prematurity management
- ECMO fundamentals and collaborative management
- High-frequency ventilation, conventional ventilator modes (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP), HFNC, Vapotherm
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) in neonates
- Seizure recognition and anti-seizure medication administration
- Insulin administration and blood glucose monitoring in neonates
- Central/arterial line management, UAC/UVC care, and blood product administration
- Neonatal infection control, sepsis workup, and isolation precautions
- Feeding support (breastfeeding, bottle, gavage), NEC awareness, and GI postoperative care
