Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive eye care exams including refraction and ocular health assessments
• Diagnose and manage common ocular diseases and refer when specialist care is needed
• Prescribe and fit corrective lenses and evaluate contact lens suitability
• Document clinical findings and treatment plans clearly and promptly in patient records
• Collaborate with medical and mental health staff to support patient care within the facility
• Maintain professional standards, comply with facility policies, and participate in quality improvement

Qualifications

• Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution
• Active California optometry license or eligibility to obtain one prior to start
• Current basic life support (BLS) certification or willingness to obtain
• Experience conducting comprehensive eye exams and managing ocular disease
• Comfort working in institutional or correctional healthcare settings is a plus
• Ability to pass background checks and meet facility onboarding requirements

Education

• Doctor of Optometry (OD) required
• Completion of accredited optometry program

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong clinical skills in refraction, slit lamp exam, and ocular disease evaluation
• Proficiency in accurate charting and maintaining medical records
• Good communication skills for clear patient education and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Ability to manage a patient panel efficiently while maintaining quality care
• Familiarity with infection control practices and workplace safety protocols
