Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures accurately and compassionately to collect patient specimens
• Label, handle, and transport specimens per lab and facility policies to ensure sample integrity
• Verify patient identity and test orders prior to collection, maintaining strict chain-of-custody procedures
• Follow infection control and safety protocols, including appropriate PPE and fit-tested respirator use
• Document collections and test information clearly in the patient chart or electronic record
• Communicate effectively with nursing, lab staff, and patients to ensure smooth specimen flow and excellent patient experience
• Participate in competency testing and required exams to maintain technical proficiency

Qualifications

• Phlebotomy certification / certified phlebotomist (required)
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
• DCI/BVP certification as listed by the facility
• Successful License/Certificate verification as part of onboarding
• Completion of required screenings: 10-panel drug screen, TB test, fit test, and required vaccinations (COVID-19, MMR, Hep B, Influenza, Varicella, Tdap)
• Ability to pass Prime Core Competencies, Prime Skills Checklist, and Prime Specialty Exam as required by the facility
• Professional attitude, attention to detail, and strong patient-care skills

Education

• Phlebotomy certification (required)
• High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)

Knowledge & Skills

• Proficient in venipuncture and specimen collection techniques
• Knowledge of specimen labeling, handling, and transport requirements
• Familiarity with infection control practices and PPE use
• Comfortable documenting in electronic health records and following order verification processes
• Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with patients of all ages
• Ability to work independently on per diem shifts and collaborate with clinical teams
