Roles & Responsibilities

• Deliver exceptional care to laboring moms, postpartum patients and their newborns from admission to discharge
• Circulate cesarean sections in the unit's two dedicated OR suites
• Titrate Pitocin and other drips while monitoring mom and baby closely
• Read and interpret fetal monitoring strips and EKG rhythms for moms in PACU
• Provide couplet care, triage and antepartum testing support in a fast paced OB-ED setting
• Float to Mother Baby or other Sacramento facilities when needed to keep care seamless
• Educate and support new families during one of the most important moments of their lives

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
• At least 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, LDRP experience is a big plus
• BLS, ACLS and NRP certifications required
• AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring required, STABLE preferred
• Comfort circulating C-sections and caring for high risk OB patients
• Two supervisory references needed at submission, one within 12 months and one within 3 years
• Candidates who were directly employed by CommonSpirit, CHI or Dignity within the past year are not eligible
• Copy of your driver's license needed at submission to validate your legal name

Education

• Common diagnoses/Types of patients preterm labor/bleeding/inductions/cesarean sections/hypertension
• Experience or 'Must have' skills Must be able to float to MB and be able to circulate c-sections. All RNs must be able to circulate C/S
• Are RNs required to titrate drips? Yes
• Common titratable &/or set rate drips Pitocin
• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Yes, generally does not take patients, but will do break relief.
• Are there nurse aids/surgical techs on this unit? OB surgical techs
• OB/Neonatologist in house 24/7? OB hospitalist 24/7 - Neo on call 24/7 and rounds daily. Anesthesia in house 24/7.
• RT Equipment (vents, Cpap, Bi Pap, etc) No vents
• Are there Tele/Monitor Techs on this unit? Are RNs required to read their own strips? Yes, must be able to read and interpret EKG strips on moms in PACU only
• EFM System: GE Corometric monitors - Fetalink surveillance
• Shifts & Scheduling:12 hr shifts. Shift starts 645. Report is at the bedside. OT and extra shifts are available. EOW and rotate with staff on holidays
• If placed on call - response time is 30 minutes
• Floating Requirements? All other Sacramento facilities. Mid-shift float to another facility is rare, but can happen. No in house floating.
• Scrubs: Provided
• Baby Catcher is also known as the NRP role. This is sometimes filled by NICU staff and sometimes by L&D. Depends on who has the staff available to do it. But it is an assignment for the entire shift.

• Strong clinical judgment in high risk labor and delivery situations
• Confident fetal monitoring and EKG strip interpretation
• Pitocin titration and drip management
• Couplet care, postpartum and antepartum nursing expertise
• Triage skills in OB-ED and antepartum testing
• Cerner charting experience
• Teamwork and adaptability with a willingness to float when needed
• Calm, compassionate communication with families during intense moments
