Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert post-operative cardiac and vascular stepdown care for CV surgery and thoracic patients
• Continuously monitor telemetry and interpret cardiac rhythms to detect changes early
• Manage chest tubes, epidurals and tube feedings safely and effectively
• Administer and titrate cardiac drips and IV therapies (phenylephrine, dobutamine, milrinone, amiodarone, heparin and others)
• Document patient care thoroughly and accurately using Cerner EMR
• Collaborate with surgeons, intensivists and multidisciplinary team members to coordinate patient-centered care
• Educate patients and families about recovery, medications and discharge plans
• Act as a team player in a fast-paced environment and help maintain safe patient ratios

Qualifications

• Active RN licensure (per facility/state requirements) and at least 2 years of clinical experience (2+ years preferred)
• Required certifications: ACLS and BLS
• Required experience: Stepdown and telemetry care
• Preferred within past year: prior CV surgery and vascular surgery population experience (open heart, TAVR, lobectomy, AAA, fem-pop bypass)
• Preferred: CVICU experience
• Proven ability to manage chest tubes, epidurals and IV glucomander/CADD pumps
• Experience with cardiac drip management and a variety of vasoactive agents
• Familiarity with Cerner EMR or similar electronic charting systems

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong telemetry interpretation and cardiac monitoring skills
• Solid post-operative cardiac and vascular patient management
• Proficiency with chest tube and epidural care
• Comfort titrating vasoactive drips and managing IV therapy
• Experience with Baxter IV pumps and CADD epidural pumps
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
• Excellent communication, patient education and critical thinking skills
• Adaptability to float across SD, MS and ER inpatient holding areas when needed
