Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform thorough pre-operative assessments and document findings clearly
• Educate patients and families about pre-op expectations and instructions
• Prepare patients physically and emotionally for their procedures
• Coordinate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and OR staff to ensure smooth handoffs
• Administer medications and start IVs as ordered while monitoring patient status
• Adhere to infection control and safety protocols to protect patients and staff
• Accurately document care in the electronic health record and escalate concerns promptly
• Contribute to a positive patient experience through compassionate, patient-centered care

Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (must meet state requirements for practice)
• Prior pre-operative or perioperative nursing experience preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required; ACLS or PALS as applicable or preferred
• Strong clinical assessment skills and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced setting
• Excellent communication skills for patient teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Ability to pass facility background checks and meet credentialing requirements

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of pre-operative assessment protocols and perioperative workflow
• Familiarity with sterile technique, infection prevention, and surgical safety
• Competence with IV therapy and medication administration
• Comfortable with electronic health record (EHR) documentation
• Ability to triage, recognize changes in patient status, and escalate appropriately
• Team-oriented mindset and strong patient advocacy skills
