Physician - Gastroenterology
Location: Springfield, MA
Contract Type: Travel Contract
Shift Type: Friday 4:00 PM - Friday 4:00 PM (7-day on-call coverage, approx. 1:4 call structure; includes day and night responsibilities — carry beeper overnight; inpatient Floor/ED/ICU consults and endoscopies as needed)
Candidate Pay Rate: $277 per hour

Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality inpatient gastroenterology consults in the floor, ED, and ICU — prioritize safe, timely care
- Perform required endoscopic procedures (colonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy with biopsy, sigmoidoscopy) with technical skill and good judgment
- Manage therapeutic procedures such as variceal injection and banding, PEG placement, foreign body removal, and fulguration/cautery as needed
- Interpret esophageal manometry and perform esophageal dilatation when indicated
- Perform liver and small bowel biopsies and document findings accurately in the chart
- Document care thoroughly in EPIC and coordinate with the inpatient care team for smooth transitions
- Carry overnight beeper and respond to emergent consults, providing clear clinical decision-making and timely procedures
Qualifications
- MD or DO degree with training in Gastroenterology (fellowship or equivalent experience)
- Board certified or eligible in Gastroenterology preferred
- Proven experience with endoscopic procedures listed in the role (colonoscopy, upper endoscopy with biopsy, PEG placement, variceal therapy, foreign body removal, fulguration/cautery)
- Experience interpreting esophageal manometry and performing esophageal dilatation
- Comfortable providing inpatient consult coverage in Floor/ED/ICU settings and carrying overnight beeper
- Proficiency with EPIC for documentation
- Ability to complete credentialing and start mid-December 2025 (credentialing timeframe: mid to late December)
- Willingness to work a locum travel assignment and integrate with the existing 4-physician group
Education
- MD or DO
- Gastroenterology fellowship or equivalent specialty training
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong procedural endoscopy skills (diagnostic & therapeutic)
- Esophageal manometry interpretation and dilatation techniques
- Biopsy techniques for small bowel and liver
- Acute inpatient consult management in ED and ICU contexts
- Proficient use of EPIC for documentation and order entry
- Good communication and teamwork for multidisciplinary inpatient care
- Ability to triage and manage emergent GI issues efficiently
