Roles & Responsibilities

• Facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their hearing peers, teachers, and staff
• Interpret classroom instruction, group discussions, and individual conversations with accuracy and cultural sensitivity
• Support an inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive
• Collaborate with teachers and special education teams to meet students' unique needs
• Adapt interpreting style to suit different grade levels and subject matters

Qualifications

• National interpreting certification (e.g., RID, NIC, or NAD) or state licensure
• Experience in educational interpreting, especially at elementary level
• Strong understanding of Deaf culture and ethical interpreting practices
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to obtain any required clearances or background checks

Knowledge & Skills

• Fluent in American Sign Language and English
• Knowledge of interpreting modes: simultaneous, consecutive, and transliteration
• Familiarity with classroom technology and assistive listening devices
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
• Cultural competence and sensitivity to diverse student populations
