Roles & Responsibilities
- Ensure sterilization integrity by following AAMI, AORN and manufacturer guidelines for cleaning and processing
- Operate and validate sterilization equipment including washer sterilizers, ultrasonic units, Sterrad, EO and steam sterilizers
- Clean and maintain flexible scopes and test instruments and sets to confirm proper working order before reuse
- Maintain loaner instrument tracking and follow IFUs and SPD procedures for loaner equipment
- Package and tape instruments according to AAMI and AORN recommendations
- Complete required QA testing and maintain accurate sterilization and processing documentation
- Communicate proactively with on-site and off-site departments to meet supply and equipment needs
- Coordinate equipment repair logistics and know where to send items for service
- Practice and promote safe work practices including infection control, MSDS awareness, safe lifting and body mechanics
- Participate in professional development to stay current with sterile processing best practices
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- CST, IAHCSMM or NICHSPOP certification preferred
- Basic Life Support (Heartsaver) to be completed within three months of hire
- One year of SPD, surgery or related experience preferred
- Demonstrated competency on department equipment per checklist
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and perform repeated standing, bending and manual tasks
- Strong time management, critical thinking and communication skills
- Familiarity with Meditech and numeric filing systems is a plus
Education
- High school diploma or GED
- CST, IAHCSMM or NICHSPOP certification preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of sterile techniques and inventory control principles
- Familiarity with instrument processing standards (AAMI, AORN) and IFUs
- Competence using sterilization equipment (Sterrad, EO, steam, ultrasonic)
- Ability to inspect and test surgical instruments and maintain QA records
- Good manual dexterity and attention to detail
- Effective verbal and written communication with clinical teams
- Strong problem-solving, research and time management abilities
- Understanding of infection control, safety procedures and MSDS
