Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead the implementation and maintenance of the internal risk management program to keep patients safe
• Oversee the organization-wide patient safety program and drive system-level improvements
• Direct and facilitate Root Cause Analyses (RCA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA) for serious events
• Investigate, evaluate, and report adverse incidents in accordance with AK statutes and regulatory requirements
• Coordinate patient disclosure and follow-up with patients, families, and clinical teams with compassion and clarity
• Facilitate Patient Safety Rounds and educate staff, leaders, and physicians on safety best practices
• Perform chart audits, clinical reviews, and data analysis to support accreditation and quality goals
• Collaborate with Medical Directors, the CMO, and legal counsel on peer-review and quality-of-care issues
• Recommend and support process improvements to reduce risk and enhance patient outcomes
• Serve as a mentor and resource for staff, modeling professional communication and regulatory compliance

Qualifications

• Current, full, unrestricted RN license in Alaska (required). Agency staff must have an active Alaska license; direct hires must have applied prior to start.
• Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) required within two (2) years of hire
• Clinical competency demonstrated within 3 months of start and maintained every 3 years
• Minimum 3 years of experience in risk management, patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance
• Proven leadership experience facilitating cross-functional teams and collaborating with clinical/administrative leaders
• Strong communication skills for effective disclosure, education, and interdepartmental collaboration

Education

• Active, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska (required)
• CPHRM certification required within two years (certification requirement)
• Clinical competency validation within 3 months; ongoing competency every 3 years

Knowledge & Skills

• Deep knowledge of risk management principles and patient safety methodologies
• Skilled in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
• Familiarity with regulatory standards (DNV, TJC, CMS, CARF) and Alaska statutes
• Experience with incident investigation, patient disclosure, and grievance analysis
• Proficiency in conducting chart audits, clinical reviews, and data-driven quality improvement
• Ability to lead educational sessions, facilitate safety rounds, and mentor clinical staff
• Strong collaboration skills working with Medical Directors, CMO, and legal counsel
